SURREY'S PLANS FOR TRANSPORTATION DURING THE 2010 WINTER OLYMPICS

January 15, 2010

The Olympic organizers are strongly encouraging people to avoid driving to the Olympics events and use more sustainable modes of transportation, such as carpooling, taking transit, cycling and walking. There will be extensive restrictions on car travel and parking in Vancouver during the Games so we are planning for additional traffic and parking demands in and around important transit locations here in Surrey especially the SkyTrain stations in the City Centre:  King George Station, Surrey Central Station, Gateway Station and Scott Road Station.  Combined with our Olympic Celebrations at Holland Park at certain times during the Olympics it won’t be “business as usual” in the City Centre.

The existing Park & Rides in the City will continue to operate at the King George and Scott Road SkyTrain Stations, and in South Surrey (at the intersection of King George Highway and Highway 99).  We are working with our partners to provide additional parking in and around Scott Road SkyTrain park and ride and updates and details of these will be provided closer to the start of the Games.

What can you do to help make our Celebrations a success?

We are making preparations for the extra visitors but we need your help to ensure your participation in the Olympics is a happy and safe experience. During the Games there will be extra traffic on the roads and more pedestrians so it is important that everyone does their part to make this time as safe and enjoyable as possible.

  • Know before you go. Plan your trips in advance and make sure you know which transit to use and what time it runs. All TransLink and BC Transit buses are accessible.

  • Leave plenty of time. Traffic, parking and transit delays should be expected so give yourself lots of time to get to your destination.

  • Carpool.  If you do have to drive, try to carpool to a Park & Ride or meet at a friends’ house and take transit together.

  • Consider parking further away from the SkyTrain stations and Holland Park Celebration Site and walk a few extra blocks.

  • Respect all parking controls and restrictions.  They are there for a reason!  We have a responsibility to maintain the safe movement of everyone using the roads ensuring transit, the emergency services, cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use our roads. We don’t want to spoil your Olympic experience by having to give you a parking ticket. It is your responsibility to park in a safe manner so when you park, carefully check for any parking restriction signs, do not park in front of fire hydrants, close to intersections or obstruct pedestrian crosswalks.  Even if other vehicles have parked in the wrong place, don’t take the risk and don’t get caught out.

  • When you park, respect the neighbourhood you are in. People still have to get on with their lives so try and keep noise to a minimum and do not block driveways.

  • Walk, bike and use public transit whenever possible. Using these modes will ensure you get to your destination while contributing to a more sustainable Games.

  • Drive with extra care.  Some of the busiest times will be in the evening with the possibility of rain or snow.  There will be lots of pedestrians, including children and many people will be visiting Canada and our City for the first time and may be unsure where to go and what they should do.  We need you to make these a safe Games by driving carefully and slowly.

  • Be patient, relax and enjoy yourself!  Transit will be busy, and traffic and parking conditions will be very different so be ready for some delays.
